Enugu is the ‘coal city’ state in Nigeria, with numbers of urban areas located in the state. This article will list the notable towns that are in the state, and the 16 local government areas they fall under.

Overview

The state’s name ‘Enugu’ is coined from the two Igbo words, “Énú Ụ́gwụ́”, which means “top of the hill or mountain”. This name was given from the physical nature of the state area.

The history of Enugu State began on 27 March 1991 when it was created out of the then Anambra State, during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

Enugu state is an inland state situated in the south east region of Nigeria, In terms of area, the State covers about 7,161 square kilometres. Bordered with Anambra on the West, the state also share a common boundary with Abia State on the South, Kogi on the North while Benue and Ebonyi on the East, and Imo State on the south.

Much of Enugu State economy is powered by the availability of mineral resources like coal. The state is noted for its coal deposits in commercial quantities. Enugu state is nicknamed as ‘the coal city state’, which is due to the availability of coal in a large area of the state. Other mineral deposits beside coal are also there in Enugu State. These include limestone, iron ore, crude oil, natural gas and bauxite.

Aside from mineral resources, there are agricultural activities in the state. Agricultural produce like yam tubers, palm produce and rice are the few to mention.

Many tourist centres are there in Enugu state. These include: Ezeagu Tourist Complex, Ngwo Cave and Waterfall, Polo Amusement Park, Silicon Hill, and many othere are the few attractions to the state. This is complemented with the new yam and Mmanwu festivals which is much alluring.

List of Local Government Areas and Towns in Enugu State

There are many towns situated in the 16 local government areas of the state. Enugu and Nsukka are the major towns. Let’s discover other urban areas located in the local government areas of the state.

Aninri Local Government Area

Aninri LGA is a Local Government Area in Enugu State, and it has an administrative headquarter in the town of Ndiagbor. Towns in the area include: Mpu, Ndiagbor, Nnenwe, Oduma and Opkanku.

Awgu Local Government Area

Awgu LGA is one of the local government areas in the state, with an headquarter in Awgu town. Other towns are: Agbogugu, Agbudu, Amoli and Awgunta.

Enugu East Local Government Area

Enugu East LGA is one of the seventeen local government areas of Enugu state. It has an headquarter located at the town of Nike-Uno. There are many towns in Enugu East LGA which include: Nike- Uno the LGA capital, Ugwogo, Mbuli, Njodo, Agbogazi, Ako, Akpoga and Alulu.

Enugu North Local Government Area

Enugu North LGA is one of the notable Local Government Area of Enugu state. It is headquartered at Opkara Avenue in the heart of the commercial centre of Enugu city. As a developed LGA, other towns are: Amaigbo Lane, Onuato, Umunevo and Ihenwuzi.

Enugu South Local Government Area

Enugu South LGA has it headquarter located in Uwani town. Other notable towns in the area include: Akwuke, Amechi, Ugwuaji, Obeagu, Awkunanaw and Amechi-Uwani.

Ezeagu Local Government Area

Ezeagu is one of the Local Government Area of Enugu state. It serves as one of the existing seventeen local government areas of the state. Aguobuowa town is the capital of the area and it has other urban areas like: Aguobuowa, Olo, Iwollo- Oghe, Umana Ndiagu and Aguobu-Umu.

Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area

Igbo-Etiti is a Local Government Area in Enugu state. It is well known area and it has an administrative headquarter in Ogbede town; Notable urban areas like Diogbe, Aku, Ohodo, Ukehe, Umuna, Umunko, Ekwegbe, Ozalla, Ochima, Ikolo, Idume and Ohebedim towns are the prominent places.

Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area

Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area has its headquarter in the town of Enugu-Ezike and it include other notable towns like: Etteh, Umuozzi, Ezzodo and Esodo.

Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area

Igbo-Eze South LGA is among the existing local government areas of Enugu state. The towns in the LGA are: Ibakwa-Aka, the LGA capital, Uhunowerre, Alor, Iheakpu Awka, Ovoko and Uhunowerre.

Isi-Uzo Local Government Area

Isi-Uzo LGA is one of the local government areas of Enugu state and it is in the northern senatorial district of the state. It is headquartered in the town of Ikem. Towns making up the area include: Umualor, Eha-Amufu, Neke, Mbu and Ikem.

Nkanu-East Local Government Area

Nkanu-East LGA is one of the Local Government Areas of Enugu state. It is headquartered in the town of Amagunze. Other towns in the area include: Ihuopkara, Akpawfu (Akpofu), Amagunze, Amauzam, Owo, Amechi-Idodo, Nara, Nkerefi, Nomeh, Ogbahu, Oruku and Ugbawka.

Nkanu-West Local Government Area

Nkanu-West Local Government Area is one of the local government in the state located at the town of Agbani, consisting of the communities such as Akpugo, Akegbe- Ugwu, Agbani, Akpugo-Ndiuno, Uwani Akpugo-Obinagu and others.

Nsukka Local Government Area

Nsukka Local Government Area headquarter is situated in the town of Nsukka, a prominent urban centre that houses the University of Nigeria. There are also other towns in the area, which include: Ede-Oballa, Eha-Alumona, Okpuje, Opi-Agu, Edem, Umuabor, Opi, Opi- Agu, Okpaligbo, Okutu, Opkuje, Obukpa and Ibagwani.

Oji-River Local Government Area

Oji-River LGA is a Local Government Area in Enugu State. It got a name from the River Oji, a major river in the area. It is headquartered in the town of Oji and several other notable towns such as Inyi, Akpugo-Eze, Achi-Uno, Oji-River (Urban), Ugwuoba and Awlaw make up the area.

Udenu Local Government Area

Udenu Local Government Area is located in Obollo-Afor town and consists of these communities and towns: Ezima-Uno, Obollo- Afor, Ezima-Agu, Amolla, Igugu, Umundu Orba, Agbodu, Aba, Obollo-Etiti, Obollo-Eke, Imilike-Uno and Imilike-Agu.

Udi Local Government Area

Udi LGA is a Local Government Area in Enugu state and it has its headquarters in the developed town of Udi. Udi LGA comprises of notable towns and communities which include: Appakwume-Nze, Okpatu, Affa, Eke, Ebe, Ngwo-Asa, Ngwo-Uno, Obioma, Abia and Amokwe.

Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area

Uzo-Uwani LGA is one of the seventeen Local Government Areas of Enugu state. Umulokpa town, a renown urban centre is the administrative headquarter of the LGA. Other notable towns include: Adaba, Umulokpa, Ojor, Igga, Adani, Uvuru and Nimbo.
