General requirements for recruitment by all paramilitary organizations in Nigeria include:

  • Those who intend to be employed by the paramilitary must be Nigerians by birth.
  • They must have the needed academic qualifications. Normally, holders of senior secondary school certificates, OND, HND, BSC and MSC are employed into the different cadres.
  • Applicants must be certified to be physically fit by government recognized hospitals.
  • Applicants must be of good character and must not be an ex-convict.
  • Male applicants must not be less than 1.65metres in height while the female must be at least 1.60metres.The male applicants must also have a fully expanded chest measured at 0.87m.

Major Paramilitary Organisations in Nigeria & Recruitment Details

#1. The Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS)

The Nigerian prisons service first sprung into duty in 1861 during the formation of the Lagos colony. They were instituted by the then British colony to take charge of the slaves who were remanded in the prisons. They have since been a very functional tool of the government.

They are mandated to take into custody the individuals who have been certified by the court to remain in Jail. They are to oversee their welfare, take them to and from the court, oversee their rehabilitation, training and subsequent reintegration into the society at the expiration of their jail term.

Functions of The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) was carved out of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in 1958. At that time, it was called the Immigration Department and carried out its duties under the headship of a Comptroller General (highest rank in the Nigerian Immigration Service).

The service also has various departments under the control of the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs as well as the Immigration Ordinance of 1958, which guides its operation. Below are the roles/ functions of the NIS:

#7. The Nigerian Police Force (NPF)
