The size of Nigeria’s geographical land area in square kilometers is 983,213 km2. The country is made up of 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with various ethnic groups and tribes divided into six geopolitical zones.

Anambra State

Anambra state land area size 4841 km 2 in kilometers and its capital is Awka.

It is among the south eastern states in Nigeria that shares boundaries with Imo, Kogi, Enugu and Rivers State.

Bauchi State

The land area of Bauchi state is measured at 45, 837 km2 and it is one of the largest states in the North-eastern region in terms of size.

The capital is Bauchi and the slogan of the state is Pearl of Tourism.

Bayelsa State

Cross River State

Delta State

Delta is a state blessed with crude oil and gas with a land area measured at 17,698 km2 in square kilometers.

The capital of Delta state is Asaba and this state has many tribes located within it.

Ebonyi State

Ebonyi is located in southeastern Nigeria and it is mostly populated by Igbo speaking people. The capital of the state is Abakaliki. Its slogan is “Salt of the nation.”

Ebonyi was formed in 1996 by the then military government. It shares boundaries with Abia and Enugu and measures a land area of of 5670 km2.

Edo State

Edo state has an estimated population of 8 million people and the ancient kingdom of Benin is its capital.

The three major ethnic groups within Edo state include Esan, Owan, and Etsako and the state has a land area measured at 17,802 km2.

With its great history, Edo is known for its culture and its slogan is “Heart Beat of the Nation.”

Ekiti State

Ekiti State has a land area measured at 6353 km2 in square kilometers which makes it one of the smallest states in the south-western Nigeria.

The capital of Ekiti is Ado Ekiti and it was created on 1 March 1996 by the military during the Sani Abacha’s regime.

Enugu State

Enugu is a state in southeastern Nigeria that was created in 1991 from the old Anambra State. It has a land area of 7161 km2.

The capital of the state is Enugu city and its slogan is titled “the Coal City”.

Gombe State

Gombe state is also located in the northeastern part of Nigeria with its capital city as Gombe. The land area size of Gombe measures 18,768km2.

Created in 1996, the state slogan is “Jewel in the Savannah”.

Imo State

Imo is also a state located at the south-eastern region of Nigeria whose capital is Owerri. Its indigenes are mostly the Igbo speaking people.

Imo state new slogan is called “Eastern Heartland” and has a land area measuring 5530 km2 in kilometers.

Jigawa State

Jigawa state is located in the Northwestern region in the country with a land area of 23,154 km2.

The capital of Jigawa is Dutse while the state’s slogan is titled “New World”.

Kaduna State

It is one of the biggest states in the country with a land area measuring 46,053 km2.

Kaduna state is mostly occupied by the Hausa and Fulani speaking tribe.

Kano State

Kano state has a land area of 20,131 km2. It was established in 1967 during the time of the military regime.

Katsina State

Katsina state land area is measured at 24,192 km2. The capital of the state is Kastina.

Kebbi State

The state land area is measured at 36,800 km2 and its nickname is known as “Land of Equity”.

Kogi State

Kogi’s capital is in Lokoja and the state has a land area of 29,833 km2 in terms of measurement.

Kwara State

Kwara has a land area of 36, 825 km2 and it is located in the middle belt. Its capital is Ilorin.

Lagos State

The smallest state in Nigeria in terms of size is Lagos state measuring a land area of .3345 km2. With a population of over 25 million residents, it is one of the most populated state in the country whose capital city is in Ikeja.

Nasarawa State

Although Nasarawa has boundaries with Abuja, it is a state with a land area of 27,117 km2 in terms of measurement.

Niger State

Niger state is the largest state in Nigeria in terms of land mass measured at in an area of 76,363 km2. The capital is Minna.

Ogun State

The nickname of Ogun State Gateway state while its capital is Abeokuta.

This Yoruba speaking state land area is measured at 16,762 km2 in square kilometers

Ondo State

The land area of Ondo state is measured at 15,500 km2 and it is also a state where Yoruba is the predominant language.

Osun State

Osun State is a Yoruba state with a land area measured at 9251 km2.

The capital of Osun state is Oshogbo while its slogan is “Land of Virtue”.

Oyo State

Oyo State is the largest state in the southwestern region of the country as its land area measures 28,454 km2.

Plateau State

Sokoto State

Sokoto state slogan is “Seat of the Caliphate” with a population of 4.2 million people. It has a land area measuring 25,973km2.

Taraba State

The capital of Taraba state is Jalingo and its located in the North-central region of the country.

Taraba measures a land area of 54,473 km2 in kilometers and its slogan is “Nature’s gift to the nation”.

Yobe State

Yobe’s capital is Damaturu and its slogan is Pride of the Sahel.

Formed form Borno in the north eastern region of the country, the land area measures 45,502 km2.

Zamfara State

Zamfara is a state in northwestern Nigeria with a land area measuring 39,762 km2.

It was carved out from Sokoto in 1996 and its slogan is “Farming is our pride”.
