Imo State: List of Local Government Areas & Towns

Imo state has twenty-seven (27) local government areas with their respective towns. This article will incorporate the towns and notable urban areas that are in these local government areas in Imo state.

Overview of Imo State

Imo state is referred to as the ‘Eastern Heartland’, and it’s situated in the central south-eastern region of Nigeria. The state was created in 1976 by the regime of General Murtala Muhammed as one of the 36 States of Nigeria. Igbo ethnic group are the major occupants of the state, with other small variation of other tribes.

Owerri, the state capital is the largest urban area in the state. There are other notable towns like Orlu, Obowo, Oguta, Mbaise and Okigwe in the state. Imo state has agricultural resources and natural resources including crude oil, natural gas, lead, Calcium Carbonate and zinc. There are also tourist attraction sites and various traditional cultural festivals in the state.

List of Local Government Areas and Towns in Imo State

The following is the rundown of local government areas in Imo state and the urban areas/towns that are in it:

Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area

Aboh-Mbaise LGA is a local government area in Imo state. It has an administrative headquarter in Aboh town, and it also has other notable towns which include; Nguru-Nweke, Nguru-Ahiato and many other urban areas.

Ahiazu-Mbaise Local Government Area

Ahiazu-Mbaise LGA counts as one of the existing local government areas of Imo State. It has an headquarter which is in the town of Afor Oru. Other towns in the area include; Oru-Ahiara, ogbe, Lude/Nnara-Mbia, Obodo-Ahiara, Ekwere-Azu, Obohia, Umuokirika, Obodo-Ujichi, Ogwuama/Amuzi, Akobor and Nkpam.

Ehime Mbano Local Government Area

Ehime Mbano LGA is one of the local government area in the state, and its the largest in terms of size and area. Umuezeala town is the headquarter of the area.

There are other towns in the area which include; Umezeala, Agbaja, Umueze, Umukobia and Nneoto.

Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area

Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA is a Local Government Area in Imo state, and it is headquartered in the town of Itu.

Amumara, Akpodim, Azuzuahia-Eziudo, Owagia-Eziudo, Ife, Obizi, Onicha, and Udo towns are the notable urban areas that make up the local government area.

Ideato North Local Government Area

Ideato North LGA is in list as one of the twenty-seven Local Government Areas in Imo state, and it has its administrative headquarter in Urualla Town.

The local government area consists of towns like Akpullu, Umualaoma, Osina, Isiokpo, Akokwa and Uzii.

Ideato South Local Government Area

Ideato South LGA counts as one of the local Government Area of Imo state. Th area has its headquarters in the town of Dikenafai and comprises of other urban areas.

The following are the towns in Idaeto South LGA; Ntueke, Umuchima, Ubiohia, Umuobom, Umueshi and Umuakam/Umuago.

Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area

Ihitte Uboma LGA is a Local Government Area in Imo State, and they have a capital sited in the town of Isinweke. Towns and notable urban areas in Ihitte Uboma LGA include; Amakoha, Umuezegwu, Ato- werem, Abuke, Umuoma, Amainyi, Awuchinumo, Umuihi, Ezimba and Onichi-Uboma.

Ikeduru Local Government Area

Ikeduru LGA is one of the local government councils in Imo state. Its headquarter is located in the renown town of Iho. There are other notable towns in Ikeduru LGA and they consist of Abasu, Akabo, Amaimo, Amakohia, Amatta, Atta, Avuvu, Ezima, and Owu-binubi.

Isiala Mbano Local Government Area

Isiala Mbano LGA has an administrative headquarter in Umuelemai town. Other prominent towns in the area are; Umuduru, Osu-Owerre, Asu-ama, Umosu, Amausari, Amaraku, Obollo, Umunkwo, Ogbor, Uguri, Ibeme, and Oka.

Isu Local Government Area

Isu LGA counts as one of the Local Government Areas in the state, and with its headquarters in the town of Umundugba. Isu LGA consist of other prominent communities and towns like Umuno-Ugba, Amadugba, Ekwe, Amurie- Amanze, Isunjaba, Uburu Ekwe and Oboro-Amurie.

Mbaitolu Local Government Area

Mbaitolu LGA is one of the existing Local Government Areas in Imo State, and it is headquartered in the town of Nworieubi. Other notable towns which make up the area include; Eziama Obiato, Umunoha, Orodo, Afara, and Ogwa.

Ngor Okpala Local Government Area

Ngor Okpala LGA is one of the  Local Government Area of Imo State. It headquarter is located in the town of Umuneke Ngor. Other towns in the area include: Nguru, Umuowa, Umukabia Ngor, Ntu, Alulu, Oburu, Obokwe and Alatia.

Njaba Local Government Area

Njaba LGA is a local Government Area of Imo State and amongst the twenty seven local government areas of the state. It’s headquarters is located in the town of Nnenasa with other towns like Umuaka, Okwudor, Amucha and Attah making up Njaba LGA.

Nkwerre Local Government Area

Nkwerre LGA is one of the Local Government Areas of Imo state. It has an headquarter in the town of Nkwerre, with other prominent urban areas like Nkwerre, Owerre-Nkworji, Eziama Obaire, Amaokpara, Umudi, Umuezeanoruo and Umunwala still in the area.

Nwangele Local Government Area

Nwangele LGA is one of the twenty-seven Local Government Areas of Imo State. It headquarter is in Amaigbo town. Other towns include; Abbe, Isu, Umuozu and Abajah, each comprising of a number of autonomous villages.

Obowo Local Government Area

Obowo LGA has an headquarter located in the town of Otoko. It is in numer as one of the 27 Local Government council in the state.

Notable towns and villages in Obowo LGA include: Avutu, Ehume, Umuariam/Achara, Alike Obowo, Amuzi-Obowo, Ikwuato, Umunachi, Umuokeh, Umuosochie and Umungwa.

Oguta Local Government Area

Oguta LGA is a renown local government area in Imo state. It has an administrative headquarter located in the town of Oguta with other towns like Agwa, Orsu Obodo, Egwe, Nnebukwu, Egbuoma, Awa, Akabor, Mgbelle, Ezi Orsu, Nkwesi, and Izombe still making up the area.

Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area

Ohaji-Egbema LGA has it headquarter in Mmahu-Egbema town. Other notable towns in the area include: Nwari-Agwa, Egbema, Ohoba, Assa, Obile, Umuokanne, Awara-Ikwerede, Mgbirichi, Umuopu and others.

Okigwe Local Government Area

Okigwe LGA is a renown local government area in Imo State. It has a capital located in the town of Okigwe and other notable towns like Otanzu, Amuro, Umulolo, Ihube, and Otan-Chara making up the area.

Onuimo Local Government Area

Onuimo LGA is one of the local government areas in the state, with it headquarter in Okwe town. Other towns include; Ofeahia, Umuanumeze, Okwelle and Umucheke.

Orlu Local Government Area

Orlu LGA counts as one of the twenty-seven Local Government Councils in Imo State. It has an headquarter in the renown town of Orlu. Towns in Orlu LGA include the following; Umuzike, Umuowa, Umutanze, Umuna, Umudioka, Okporo, Orlu, Ogberuru, Obibi-Och, Mgbee, Ihitte-Owerre, Ihioma, Ebe, Eziachi, Amaifeke and Amaike.

Orsu Local Government Area

Orsu LGA is a Local Government Area inImo State. It has an administrative headquarter located in the town of Awo-Idemili. Other towns and urban areas in Orsu LGA include: Amaruru, Assa- Ubirielem, Awo-idemili, Ebenator, Eziawa, Ihitte-Nasa, Ihitte-Ukwu and Umuhu-Okaiba.

Oru East Local Government Area

Oru East LGA is one of the Local Government Areas in Imo State, and it has an headquarter domiciled in the town of Omuma with other urban areas like Akatta, Akuma/Amagu, Amiri, Ofekatai, Omuma, Eziawo, and Awo-Omama still making up the area.

Oru West Local Government Area

Oru West LGA has an headquarter in the town of Mgbidi. There are other urban areas which include; Amaofuo, Eleh, Aji, Mgbidi, Ibi Asoebe, Nempi Otulu, Ohakpu, Ubulu and Ozara.

Owerri Municipal Local Government Area

Owerri Municipal LGA is the capital and the most developed local government area in Imo state. It administrative headquarter is located in the heart of the city of Owerri, and the area consist of other urban areas the districts of Owerri Urban and which include; New Owerri, and the rest of other notable towns.

Owerri North Local Government Area

Owerri North LGA is one of the local government council in Imo state, and has its headquarters in Orie Uratta Town. Towns and notable villages in the area include; Egbu, Ulakwo, Emekuku, Emii, Agbala, Naze, Awaka, Azaraubo, Amakohia Uratta, Ezimba and Orji.

Owerri West Local Government Area

Owerri West LGA is a prominent local government area in Imo State, and its headquarters is in the town of Umuguma. The renown Federal Polytechnic town, Nekede is a notable town in the area, with others including: Avu, Nekede, Ihiagwa, Obinze, Umunwoha, Okukuv (Obogwu), Okolochi, Eziobodo and Oforola.
