Oyo is the ‘pace setter’ state, and one of the thirty-six states in Nigeria. In this write-up, we’ll take a gander about Oyo state, outlining the local government areas and towns in them.

Overview of Oyo State

Oyo state was created in 1976 from the then Western region, and got its name from the old Ọyọ empire. Situated in the central western part of Nigeria, Oyo state covers a total of 28,454 square kilometres of land mass and it shares common boundary in the south by Ogun State, in the north by Kwara State, in the west it is partly bounded by Ogun State and partly by the Republic of Benin, while in the East by Osun State.

Yoruba ethnic group make up the majority of Oyo state population, with other residents groups and foreigners. With respect to religion, the state has a rational number of Christians and Muslims. Oyo State is one of the most visited states in the country. Major tourist attractions located in the state include: the Old Oyo National Park, Agodi Botanical Garden, Ado-Awaye Suspended lake, Mapo Hall, University of Ibadan Zoological Garden, Ido Cenotaph, and the Trans-Wonderland Amusement Park are all situated in the state.

List of Local Government Areas and Towns in Oyo State

Oyo State has thirty-three local government areas with their respective capital towns. With Ibadan city being the major urban area in the state, other notable cities and towns include Ọyọ, Ogbomọsọ , Ibadan, Isẹyín-Okeogun, Ipapo-Okeogun, Iroko, Lanlate, Idere.

Afijio Local Government Area

Afijio LGA is one of Oyo State Local Government Area. It is headquartered in Jobele, a prominent town in the state. Other notable towns and villages of Awe, Akinmoorin, Alapadi, Anfelerin, Bali, Basi,Fiditi, Ilora, Imini, Jobele, Iware, Iluaje, Oluwatedo and Ojutaye among other places which make up Afijio LGA.

Akinyele Local Government Area

Akinyele LGA is one of Oyo State Local Government Area. Headquartered in Moniya, a notable town in the state, other urban areas include the following: Ikereku, Iroko, Moniya, Idi, Ori, Ileba, Salako, Togiri, Anisere, Asani, Ejitolu, Elewintan, Folarin, Idi-Odan, Mele, Molarere, Okegbemi, Ojerinde and Olode.

Atiba Local Government Area

Atiba LGA is one of the Local Government Area in Oyo State. Headquartered in the town of Ofa Meta, other notable towns, wards and villages here include: Agunpopo, Aremo, Ashipa, Bashorun, Aaatan, Abolupe, Afonja, Agbaa, Agbaakin, Agbaka, Agbalowo-Asa, Agberinde, Ajalaruru,Ajegunle and Ajikobi.

Atisbo Local Government Area

Atisbo Local Government Area of Oyo State is headquatered in Tede town. Other notable urban areas that make up the area include: Ago Are, Irawo, Sabe, Tede, Baasi, Ofiki, and Owo.

Egbeda Local Government Area

Egbeda LGA is one of the local government areas in Oyo State. Egbeda town acts as the headquarter of the Local Government Area. Other notable towns, district and villages include Ayede /Alugbo, Egbeda, Erunmu, Olodo / Kumapayi, Osegere, Owobaale / Kasumu, Adeyadi, Alagbo, Ayede, Buramo, Fatade and Fayo.

Ibadan North Local Government Area

Ibadan North LGA of Oyo State is a prominent urbanised local government area. It is headquartered in Agodi, a notable town in the area. There are many urban areas in the LGA, and the wards include: Ward I N2, Ward Ii,N3, Ward Iii, N4, Ward Iv, N5a,Ward Ix.

Ibadan North-East Local Government Area

Ibadan North East LGA is a remote Local Government Area in Oyo State. It is headquatered in IDi-Ape Iwo road. Notable urban areas include: Orita Bashorun, Iyaganku GRA, Iwo road, Total Garden Area and Monatan.

Ibadan Northwest Local Government Area

Ibadan Northwest is another local government area in Oyo State. With an administrative headquarter in Onikere town, other major towns of Onireke, Ayeye, Dugbe, Inalnde, Ologuneru & many other remote villages make up Ibadan Northwest LGA.

Ibadan South East Local Government Area

Ibadan South East is one of Oyo State local government areas. It has an administrative headquarters located in Mapo town. Notable urban areas here include Mapo and other twelve wards.

Ibadan South West Local Government Area

Ibadan South West is one of the Local Government Areas of Oyo State. Headquartered in Aleshinloye town, it has about eleven council wards. Notable urban areas here include: Awodife, Bode Oluyole, Osi, Aleshinloye.

Ibarapa Central Local Government Area

Ibarapa Central LGA is one of Oyo State Local Government Area. It is headquartered in Igbo Ora town, and it consist of other towns and villages of Sango, Panu, Sango Odo, Sangote, Sobaloju, Sunmirire, Temidire-Idiope, Lanlate, Alapa, Igbodudu, Itabo, Oluwo, Olori, Olokenoji and Okolo.

Ibarapa East Local Government Area

Ibarapa East LGA is one of Oyo State Local Government Areas. It has an headquarter in Eruwa town, with other notable urban areas like Aborerin, Anko, Isaba, Isale, Togun, Itabo, New Eruwa, Oke -Oba, Oke Otun, Oke-Imale, Lanlate and Sango towns making up the area.

Ibarapa North Local Government Area

Ibarapa North LGA of Oyo State has its headquarters in Ayete, a notable town in the state. Other notable urban areas include: Igangan, Tapa, AgunOjekunle, Ajelanwa, Akowe, Alagbaa, Alapala, Apagbo, Elewure, Gbodiko, Gboko and Iki.

Ido Local Government Area

Ido LGA is a principal Local Government Area in Oyo State. headquartered in Ido town where the area got it name from, other urban areas include: Olonwe, Oloode, Omojoro, Onigbinde, Onikonko, Onisago, Opaeye, Owolabi, Oyawole, Pakuru, Tokan,Yidi Aba Emo, Aba Oke and Adelogun.

Irepo Local Government Area

Irepo Local Government Area is headquartered in Kisi town with the other notable urban areas, districts and villages of Agoro, Ajagunna, Ikolaba, Kisi, Alagbon, Alegongo, Amuda Aro, Apata, Arogbe, Atipa, Ayifo, Ayola, Baale, Ajila, Baba Ilorin, Barunganma,Budo Ibadan and Budo Abu.

Iseyin Local Government Area

Iseyin LGA of Oyo State has it administrative headquarter in Iseyin town, where the area got it name from. Notable urban areas in the area include the following: Ado Awaye, Osogun Aagba, Aba Nla, Aba Tapa, Abapan, Abidioki, Aboriso, Abule Nla,Abule Oloola,Adeagbo, Adegbola and Adekola.

Itesiwaju Local Government Area

Itesiwaju LGA is one of the Local Government Area in Oyo State. With an headquarter in the town of Otu, other notable urban areas include: Ariyo, Aroje, Ayodele, Baba-Sango, Balelayo, Elekuku, Babaode, Igbojaiye, Ipapo, Komu, Okaka, Oke-Amu, Otu, Owode and Ipapo.

Iwajowa Local Government Area

Iwajowa LGA is one of Oyo State Local Government Areas. Headquartered in Iwere Ile town, other notable urban areas include: Aiyegun, Idiko,Ago, Itasa, Ayetoroile, Idiko-Ile, Iganna, Ijio, Ilaji Ile, Aiyegun Border Area, Oha, Wasinmi,Aba Akinsapon, Aba Ayetoro-Ile and Aba.

Kajola Local Government Area

Kajola LGA is one of the Local Government Area in Oyo State. It has an administrative headquarter located in Okeho town. Towns and districts in the area include: Ilero, Ayetoro-oke, Isemi Ile, Iwere-oke, Ilaji-oke, Ado-Awaye, Akinwumi, Osoogun, Ekunle, Faramora, Ijemba, Oke-Ola,Oke-Oja, Isalu and Koso.

Lagelu Local Government Area

Lagelu LGA is one of the Local Government Areas in Oyo State. It has an headquarter in the town of Iyana Offa. Notable urban areas in Lagelu LGA include the following: lalupon, Lagun, Monatan, Ofa, Ejioku, Oyedeji, Kelebe, Sagbe, Elegbaada,Olowode,Wofun, Ogburo, Kutayi, Apatere and Olorunda.

Ogbomoso North Local Government Area

Ogbomoso North LGA is a remote area in the state. It is one of the urbanised local government areas in Oyo state, and has an administrative headquarter in Kinnira town, consisting of other towns, wards and districts of Aaje Ogunbado,Oke Agbede, Abogunde, Aguodo, Masifa,Isale Afon, Isale Alaasa,Isale and Ora/Saja.

Ogbomoso South Local Government Area

Ogbomoso South LGA of Oyo State is headquatered in Arowomole town. Other towns and villages of Idi- igba, Gaa- Lagbedu, Kajola, Kowe, Oke- Ola, Adeoye, Onidewure, Molete, Arowomole, Sanuaje, Obandi, Ijeru, Ayegun and Oke Alapata also make up the area.

Ogo Oluwa Local Government Area

Ogo Oluwa LGA is one of the thirty-three Local Government Areas of Oyo State. It has an administrative headquarters in Ajaawa town. Other notable towns, villages and district include Bode Osi, Alagbon, Elepo, Idi Oro, Jagun, Molosayowo, Olowo, Paku, Odan, Ikire Ile/Iwara, Alaro, Ille-Ogo, Adunmode and Aguntan.

Olorunsogo Local Government Area

Olorunsogo Local Government Area is located in Igbetti, Oyo State consisting the district and wards which include Aboke, Aboyun Ogun,Elerugba,Elehinke, Sagbo,Aperu,Ikolaba/Obadimo, Onigbeti, Saagbon, Agoro,Santo, Onigbeti, Agbeni, OpaOgunniyi and Seriki.

Oluyole Local Government Area

Oluyole LGA is a Local Government Area im Oyo state, and it’s headquartered in Idi-Ayunre town. Notable urban areas in Oluyole LGA include the following: Ekefa, Seko, Ayegun, Idi-Iroko,Ikereku, Idi-Osan, Egbeda-Atuba, Muslim Ogbere, Odo-Ona, Nla, Okanhinde, Latunde and Olomi/Olunde.

Ona Ara Local Government Area

Ona Ara LGA is one of the notable Local Government Area in Oyo State. It has an headquarter located in Akanran town, with other notable urban areas like Akanran, Olorunda, Araromi,Aperin, Badeku, Gbada Efon, Odi Odeyale, Odi Aperin, Ogbere, Ogbere, Tioya, Ojoku/Ajia and others making up for the area.

Oorelope Local Government Area

Oorelope is a Local Government Area in the state, and it has an headquarter located in Igboho town. The list of notable urban areas here include: Igboho township, Aba-Woru, Aba-Yekini, Abo-Mango, Aboni-Ayo, Abule-Soro, Adefi, Adenko, Adeta, Afun, Agunla and Ahoro-Adan.

Orire Local Government Area

Orire LGA is one of the thirty-three Local Government Areas of Oyo State. It comprises of notable towns and villages of Ikoyi-Ile, Oolo, Abaja, Abeabaja, Acute, Afekulu, Afun, Afun,Ile, Afun-Iju, Agbeni, Agidi, Ago Fulani, Aiyetoro,Ajegunle,Gbola and Ajibowu among others.

Oyo East Local Government Area

Oyo East Local Government Area of Oyo State is headquartered in Kosobo town.  Notable urban areas like: Agboye, Molete, Ajagba, Alaodi, Modeke, Apaara, Apinni, Balogun, Jabata, Oke Apo, Oluajo, Owode, Araromi make up the area.

Oyo West Local Government Area

Oyo West LGA is one of Oyo State Local Government Areas. It has an administrative headquarters in Ojongbodu town, and comprising other towns of Ajokidero, Akewugberu, Akeetan, Fasola/Soku, Iseke, Isokun, Iyaji Ojongbodu and Opapa.

Saki East Local Government

Saki East Local Government Area of Oyo State is headquatered in Ago-Amodu town, Oyo State. Other notable towns and districts in the area include: Ogunlere, Laipapa, Ajandaku, Sango, Wiliki, Yanrin funfun, Arugede, Kaaka, Oje-Owode, Alagolo, Buda Banki, Ago-Amodu,Mangoro and Imodi.

Saki West Local Government Area

Saki West LGA is a Local Government Area in Oyo State. With an headquater in Saki town, the area consist of notable urban areas which include the following:  Saki, Ekokan, Aba Ilero, Aba Iseyin, Aba Ogbomosho, Aba Seele, Abatade, Abawaye, Agbele, Ago Oluwabi, Agunloye, Aroje, Asabari, Ataye, Bodilu, Budo,Eniola & others.

Surulere Local Government Area

Surulere LGA is one of Oyo State Local Government Area. Headquartered in Iresa-Adu town, there are other towns in the area. They include Gambari/Baya, Iresadu/Arolu, Iwofin, Oko, Aba Kae, Abewo, Abogunde, Abuduka, Ajase, Alate, Aresejowi, Asileke, Baya Oje and Biro.

Conclusion

Oyo state is arguably the centre of educational institutions in the country. Nigeria’s first degree awarding institution, the University of Ibadan was founded in 1948, and is situated in Oyo State. Many other notable institutions in the state are: Lead City University, Ibadan, Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Kola Diasi University, Ibadan, Dominion University, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology , Ogbomoso, The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology Igbo Ora, Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic Eruwa, and the host of other colleges, universities and polytechnics are in Oyo State. Complementing to these institutions, there are more than 324 secondary schools and 1,576 public primary schools in the state.
