Aminu Ado Bayero is the current and 15th Emir of Kano. He hails from the Fulani Sullubawa clan in Kano state. He was coronated on 9th of May, 2024 after Muhammad Sanusi II was dethroned by Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano State.

Biography of Aminu Ado Bayero

Bayero is the second son of Ado Bayero, the 13th Emir of Kano. He attended Kofar Kudu Primary School and had his secondary education in Government Secondary School, Birnin Kudu. He also attended Bayero University Kano where he studied mass communication. He went to Flying College, Oakland, California in the United States and did his NYSC at the Nigeria Television Authority, Makurdi.

Career

Bayero has many work experiences before he became the Emir of Kano. Before becoming a flight engineer at Kabo Air, Aminu Ado Bayero worked in the public relations department. He was appointed by his father, Ado Bayero to be the Dan Majen Kano and district head of Dala. He was later promoted to Dan Buram Kano in March of the same year.

In 1992, he was promoted to Turakin Kano and to Sarkin Dawakin Tsakar Gida Kano in 2000. He also served as the chairman of the Kano emirate durbar committee. In 2014, the then emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, promoted him to Wamban Kano, thereby, transferring him from Dala to Kano municipal where he succeeded Galadiman Kano, Alhaji Tijani Hashim as the district head.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was born into the Fulani Torodbe (Sullubawa) clan of Kano on 31st May, 1961 in Nigeria. He was also known as Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II after succeeding his late grand uncle Dr Ado Bayero who died on Friday 6 March 2014 as the 14th Emir of Kano on the 8^th March 2014. He is also a very wealthy Fulani man which makes his net worth a bit confusing.

Sanusi was a career banker and ranking Fulani nobleman, and also serves as a respected Islamic scholar. He had his West African School Certificate at the prestigious King’s College, Lagos in 1977. He earlier did his National Youth Service in former Gongola State (now Adamawa and Taraba States). Sanusi combines a career in banking with a strong background in intellectualism. He started his working career in 1983, as an academic at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he taught economics.

Banking Career

In 1985, he moved into banking industry as a merchant banker with Icon Limited (Merchant Bankers), a subsidiary of Morgan Guaranty Trust Bank of New York, and Baring Brothers of London. Thereafter, he joined the United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA) in 1997 as a Principal Manager in the Credit and Risk Management Division where he rose to the position of a General Manager. In March 2005, he joined the Board of First Bank of Nigeria PLC as an Executive Director in charge of Risk and Management Control.

He was Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, appointed on 3 March 2009 and suspended from office by President Goodluck Jonathan on 20 March 2014 after exposing a $20 billion fraud committed by the presidents’ associates in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC).

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua nominated Sanusi as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on 1 March 2009 and his appointment was confirmed by the Senate on 3 March 2009.

In March 2009, the Sanusi led the Central Bank to “rescue” Afribank, Intercontinental Bank, Union Bank, Oceanic Bank and Finbank by bailing them out with 400 billion naira of public money, and dismissed their chief executives.

Sanusi obtained a degree in Sharia and Islamic Studies from the African International University in Khartoum, Sudan in1997. Sanusi took active part in Sharia law debate.

In March 2002 he published a paper on The Hudhood Punishments in Northern Nigeria: A Muslim Criticism. In March 2003 he presented The Shari’a Debate and the Construction of a ‘Muslim’ Identity in Northern Nigeria: A Critical Perspective at a seminar at the University of Bayreuth. In March 2003 he presented Democracy, Rights and Islam: Theory, Epistemology and the Quest for Synthesis at an international conference on Shari’ah Penal and Family Law in Nigeria and in the Muslim World: A Rights-Based Approach in Abuja.
