Ahmadu Bello University was founded in the year 1962 and was named in memory of the first premier of Northern Nigeria and Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello. It is located in the ancient city of Zaria, in Kaduna state. The school is a federal government research institution and has two campuses at Kongo and at Samaru, both in the city of Zaria.
The main campus which is the Samaru campus houses the administrative offices, faculties of sciences, social-sciences, arts and languages, environmental design, education, engineering, agricultural sciences, medical sciences and research facilities while the Kongo campus which serves as a satellite campus houses the faculties of Law and Administration.
Apart from the regular undergraduate programs offered in Ahmadu Bello University, ABU Zaria runs a number of other programs like graduate programs, vocational programs, remedial programs and associate degree programs which are located at various other sites around Kaduna state.
