Recently, crude oil was discovered in some Northern states in Nigeria by the NNPC. With these new development, the country will no longer be dependent on the Niger Delta states that are among the states where you can find oil in the country.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has made a significant discovery of crude oil in the northern region of Nigeria, specifically in Nassarawa State.

The discovery was made as a result of exploratory activities conducted by the company, which confirmed the existence of substantial hydrocarbon resources in the state.

This announcement was made by the NNPC’s Group Chief Executive, Melee Kyari, who revealed that oil production activities are scheduled to begin in March 2023.

It is noteworthy that the NNPC has consistently expressed its desire to discover oil in other parts of the country, aside from the Niger Delta states.

In its frontier exploration services activities, the company has identified prospective states in Northern Nigeria where oil was expected to be discovered, including Niger, Nasarawa, Sokoto, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe.

  • Bauchi state
  • Gombe state
  • Nassarawa state
  • Kogi state

The discovery of oil in Nassarawa state is a significant development that adds to the growing list of oil-producing northern states, which includes Gombe and Yobe. Kogi State also received its first derivation allocation as an oil-producing state in 2022, making it the first northern state to enjoy such a privilege in the country.

In addition, the drilling of the various types of crude oil at the Kolmani field, which is located on the border of Bauchi and Gombe states, has already commenced.

The NNPC’s latest discovery of crude oil in Nassarawa State underscores the vast potential of Nigeria’s oil beyond the Niger Delta region.
