Full List of Functional Power Stations in Nigeria: Location & Capacity

The demand for more power consumption in Nigeria has increased to a stage whereby more watt’s and voltage of electrical current is needed to power every home, organisation and even the offices of government. To meet this demand, the government and companies have built power stations all over the country.

power plants in nigeria

In this post, we provide a list of power stations in Nigeria, their locations and the volume of electricity they generate.

A power station is basically an industrial plant that generates electricity for home and industry use. The plant has generators as turbines which run fuels such as water, coal, oil, natural gas to a distant nuclear elements to produce current.

POWER STATIONS IN NIGERIA

Generating power plants available in the country has the capacity of producing an average 5000 MW(megawatts) of electricity currents.

Due to the complexity of the energy sector, most power stations are owned by the Federal government and some by affluent businessmen/ individuals with many also owned by states. Those category owned by individuals and state government are classified as Independent Power Producer (IPP) while the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) is controlled by the federal government.

  • National Integrated Power Project(NIPP) – Owned and managed by the three tier of government (federal, state and local). The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) is also associated to this group.
  • Independent Power Producers(IPP) – Includes power generation stations wholly owned by state governments and private companies.

This is a private power station is owned by Agip Oil Company. It uses a combined cycle gas turbine to operate and has 480 megawatts capacity. The company was incepted in 2005 in the oil rich Niger Delta region of Delta State.

IBOM POWER STATION (IPP)

The Ibom Power Company is located in Ikot Abasi and is an independent power producer. It operates on simple cycle gas turbine by burning fossil natural gas. The power station was launched in 2009 by the state government and it has the capacity up to 600MW.

AES BARGE INDEPENDENT POWER STATION

This power plant is operational and it was established in 2001 at Lagos State. It has an overall capacity of 270 megawatts and uses the simple cycle gas turbine.

OMOKU POWER PLANT

This plant is characterized like the previous one but it differs by having a capacity of 150 megawatts. It was opened in Rivers State in the year 2001.

RIVERS POWER STATION

This is a state owned electricity generation plant by Rivers State Government. It works by using the gas heated system and has 180 megawatts of electricity as its average capacity.

ABA POWER GENERATOR

Launched in 2012 and situated in Aba town of Abia state, it operates on the simple cycle gas turbine system. The capacity of this power station is 140 megawatts of electricity.

CONCLUSION

Power consumption in Nigeria never decreases but always increases. This has made the need for more power stations in the country consequential. And as such, the list of power generating stations will not likely end as there are many more to meet the abysmal electricity supply in Nigeria.

All power plants in Nigeria that are dully registered are functional and their capacity can be found in this article. These power stations generate large voltage of electricity using coal, crude oil, natural gas and most times generate hydroelectric power from water stored in dams.

There are various types of power generating plants in the country. For example, fossil fuel power plants have the mechanism to combust crude oil and coal to generate the necessary heat required to generate steam, which in turn propell turbines to produce electricity. Nigeria as a country rely on hydroelectric power via dams to generate electricity and power the national grid for its citizens and these stations although limited are functional but known to be hazadous to health of both humans, plants, animals and the environment.
