Step-by-step guide on how to get a Nigeria international passport

Are you thinking on how to get your own Nigeria International passport? Below are the important steps to take while processing your passport:

1. Make Online Payment

This is the first step to take as it guarantees your readiness to completing other procedures. Unless you successfully complete this process, you can’t proceed to the next step.

To make online payment, you must perform the following:

  • Visit the official home page of the Nigeria Immigration Portal click here https://portal.immigration.gov.ng/
  • Click on ʼApply for e-passport’
  • Select the passport type of your choice either the “Standard e-Passport” OR “ Official e-Passport”,
  • Click on the ‘Start Application’ button that appears on the right side of your browser.
  • Fill the Application form
  • After filling the the application form, ensure that you recheck all the inputted data to be sure there’s no error.
  • Accept the terms and conditions and click on the “PRINT” Button to print out the documented form.
  • Submit your application and view ‘Applicant details page’
  • Having ensured that all data are correct, then you can click on the “Proceed to Online Payment” button.
  • Choose the Currency you want to pay with either Naira or Dollar. If Naira, select “Pay in Naira” and if in dollars select “Pay in Dollars” and press the ‘continue’ button.
  • Choose your preferred payment method; either via your debit/credit card or at the bank.

To people willing to pay via debit/credit card they will need to undergo some more procedures such as:

  • Filling your credit /debit card log-in credentials; and once that is done, you will click on “PAY” button.
  • Confirm that payment is made before clicking on the ‘OK’ Button. Once you have successfully completed the online payment, a “validation number” will be generated which you will use to print out payment receipt.

To people who are willing to pay via bank, you will need to select the bank of your choice. Then  click on ‘Continue’

After that, you will select “Print Acknowledgment”. This acknowledgement form confirms that you have made a certain transaction with them because it consists of  Transaction ID, Application ID & Reference Number.

2. Confirm of your Payment via the same NIS Portal

Having made the online payment, your next step is confirming your payment. You must perform the following steps to confirm payment:

  • Click on the “Query your Application Payment Status” button and enter your Passport Application ID and Reference No. (for bank users).
  • You will see a space for “Validation Number” for those who paid via debit/credit card, so, just put your validation number.
  • Click the “Search Record” button and you will be redirected to the “Applicant’s Details” page which contains a set date for your interview.
  • Click on “Print NIS e-receipt” button to have a copy of a NIS e-receipt of your own which you must take to your interview venue.

3.  Generate Your Passport Guarantor’s Form

Guarantor’s form is also needed during interview, therefore, it is important you have it with you.

This procedure is equally done via the Nigeria Immigration Service portal; you only need to observe the following steps:

  • Click on passport Guarantor’s form at the home page of the portal
  • Enter your reference and ID Number that was generated on the acknowledgment slip during payment.
  • Click on the ‘Print’ button to print out the mandatory guarantor’s form.

4. Attend NIS Interview

This interview is nowhere closer to job interview, it’s just a platform where you are being asked some questions about you and your profession and other important facts.

However, while going for this interview, you must ensure some important documents are with you.

These documents to bring to the interview include:

  • Acknowledgment slip, payment receipt and two recent photographs.
  • A Copy of well-documented application form.
  • Printed and signed application
  • Forms to Passport office
  • Photocopy of your guarantor’s form
  • Driving License
  • National Identity Card among others
