Seaports are ports located close to the sea where sea vessels, mainly ships bring in goods from other countries into Nigeria and export Nigerian goods to other countries too. Nigerian sea ports are managed by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). They serves as the essential spots with facilities where ships can dock and transfer people or cargo to or from land.
Nigerian Seaports are mainly located in Southern Nigeria due to the presence of the Atlantic Ocean which serves as the medium where goods are mainly transported to and from Nigeria.
Seaports in Nigeria are located in the southern part of the country; more specifically states that shares border with the Atlantic Ocean. They serve as depot with facilities where ship can dock and transfer cargo and people to or from land. They are the ports where goods are transported into and from the country.
These ports are 6 in number and are been operated and regulated by the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA). These Nigerian seaports include the Lagos Port Complex, Tin Can Island Port, Rivers Port Complex, Delta Port, Calabar Port and the Onne Port.
Northern Nigeria has no seaports because of its lack of closeness to any large water body that is very important in world trade. With that in mind, let us look at the various seaports in Nigeria below.

Below is a list of all functional seaports in Nigeria and their various locations:
1. LAGOS PORT COMPLEX
Lagos Port Complex also was established in 1914. It is also known as the Port of Lagos and it is the largest sea port in Nigeria. The Lagos Port Complex is situated in the Apapa area of Lagos and it sits on about 200 hectares of land, covering an area of 120,000 m². Its capacity is 7,000 TEUs.
The Lagos port complex has 19 berths for general cargo, 2 berths for bulk cargo, 6 berths for container handling and 1 berth for Roll-on-Roll-Off operations. It currently has 4 terminal operators which includes; Apapa Bulk Terminal, AP Moller Terminal, Consortium and Greenview Development Nigeria Limited (a subsidiary of Dango Port Operations).
Among other facilities, this port has a bulk wheat grain silo with a storage capacity of 76,600 tonnes. Lagos Port Complex serves as the economic door to the Nigeria. Together with the Tin Can Island Lagos, they serve the Western part of the country.
Lagos Port Complex is the largest and busiest seaport in Nigeria and located in Apapa, Lagos state with an area extent of about 200 hectares of land.
This seaport together with the Tin Can Island Port; serve the Western part of the country. The Lagos Port Complex is the economic door to Nigeria. Lagos Port Complex is also known as the Port of Lagos or the Apapa Port.
This Nigerian seaport has 5 private terminals. The terminal operators include AP Moller Terminal Ltd. (APMT), ENL Consortium Ltd. (ENL), Apapa Bulk Terminal Ltd. (ABTL), Greenview Development Nigeria Ltd. (GNDL) and Lilypond Inland Container Terminal.
The Port also has two Logistics bases. These are the Eko Support Services Ltd and the Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics (LADOL) as well as 8 jetties. Sugar, Salt and Flour are produced in factories belonging to operators within the port.
2. TIN CAN ISLAND PORT
Tin Can Island Port (TCIP) was opened for operations in the year 1997 and had the Roro Port merged to it in 2006. In Nigeria today, the Tin can Island Port is the second busiest seaport after the Lagos Port Complex.
Tin Can Island Port is also situated in Apapa and it is being currently operated by 5 terminal operators which are Port and Terminal Multiservices Limited (PTML), Josephdam Ports Services Limited, Tin Can Island Container Limited, Port & Cargo Handling Services Limited and Five Star Logistics Limited.
The Tin Can Island Port Complex is the product of the merging of the Roro Port and the Tin Can Island Ports. This seaport was established in 1975 and together with the Port of Lagos (the one above), they serve the western part of the country.
Just like the Port of Lagos, it has 5 terminals. The operators of these terminals include Josephdam Ports Services Limited, Tin Can Island Container Limited, Port & Cargo Handling Services Limited, Five Star Logistics Limited and Port & Terminal Multi-Services Limited.
3. CALABAR PORT
The Calabar port is a sea port located in the ancient city of Calabar, the Cross River state capital. Calabar Port currently has 3 terminals namely; The New Port, The Old Port and The Dockyard and several other crude oil terminals operated by 3 terminal operators. These are INTELS Nigeria Ltd, ECM Terminal Ltd and Shoreline Logistics Nigeria.
Calabar Port is the longest serving port as well as the oldest port in Nigeria.
Calabar Port Complex comprises of the Old Port, the New Port and the Dockyard. It has jurisdiction over Crude Oil Terminals at Antan, Odudu, Yoho, QuaIboe; and other jetties at NIWA, McIver, NNPC, ALSCON, Dozzy, Northwest.
Calabar Port has 3 terminals and is operated by are operated by ECM Terminal Ltd, INTELS Nigeria Ltd and Shoreline Logistics Nigeria Limited.
4. RIVERS PORT COMPLEX
The Rivers Port Complex is one of the most important seaports in Nigeria located in the coastal Rivers State and comprises the Port of Port Harcourt and Okrika Refined Petroleum Oil Jetty as well as Haastrup/Eagle Bulk Cement Jetty, Ibeto Jetty, Kidney Island Jetty, Macobar Jetty and Bitumen Jetty.

This port is not been operated by The Nigerian Port Authority like the other seaports in Nigeria. Rivers is one of the largest oil producer in Nigeria.
Rivers Port Complex is one of the most important seaports in Nigeria and it is located in Rivers state, one of the states that produce oil in the country.
Unlike the remaining ports in the country, the Rivers Port is not operated by the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA). There are 2 main operators in this port; Ports and Terminal operators and BUA Ports and Terminals.
5. DELTA PORT
Delta Port is located in Delta state. It is among the 3 major ports located in the oil and gas producing States in Nigeria and as such is a very important one in the country considering the importance of oil and gas in the country. It includes the ports of Warri, Sapele, Burutu and the petroleum terminals at Escravos and Forcados.
Delta Port Complex is one of the 3 major ports located in the Niger Delta Domain. These ports are important because of the importance of oil in the country.
6. ONNE PORT
This seaport is located in Rivers State on the Ogu Creek near the Bonny River some 19 km away from Port Harcourt. Onne port area is located in 3 local government areas in Rivers State which are: Bonny LGA, Eleme LGA and Ogu-Bolo LGA. Onne port consists of two major facilities which are the Federal Ocean Terminal and the Federal Lighter Terminal.
This Port has been designated as an Oil and Gas Free Zone by the Federal Government of Nigeria and as such, over 100 companies have licenses to work at Onne Port.
Onne Port Complex is one of the seaports in Nigeria located in Rivers state. It is located on the Ogu Creek near the Bonny River some 19km away from Port Harcourt.
The port consists of 2 major facilities; the Federal Ocean Terminal and Federal Lighter Terminal. The Federal Government of Nigeria designated this zone Oil and Gas Free Zone and as such, over 100 companies have license to work in this port.
