Adamawa is one of the 36 states in Nigeria, and the state has local councils and prominent towns in it. In this article, we will take a look at the local government areas and towns in Adamawa state.

Overview

The name of the state  “Adamawa” came from the founder of the kingdom, Modibo Adama. He was a regional leader of the Fulani Jihad organized by Usman dan Fodio of Sokoto in 1804. Adamawa was a subordinate kingdom of the Sultanate of Sokoto before it became a state in Nigeria.

Adamawa state is situated in northeastern region of Nigeria. The state has a capital in Yola.

It is the home of the American University of Nigeria in Yola, Modibbo Adama University of Technology Yola, Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola and Adamawa State college of Nursing and Midwifery.

Area

In term of land mass, Adamawa state is one of the largest states in Nigeria, as it occupies about 36,917 square kilometres. It borders Borno to the northwest, Gombe to the west, Taraba to the southwest, and eastern border with Cameroon Republic.

People

Though there are many ethnic groups in Adamawa, but Fulani is the most prevalent tribe. Others groups in the state include Dong, Gengle, Kumba, Mumuye, Nyong, Chamba Daka, Teme, Yendang, and other variants. In respect to religion, Adamawa state has a rational number of Muslims and Christians, but Islam is the leading religion in the state.

The major occupation of the people in the state is farming as reflected in the state crop produce. The major cash crops in the state are cotton and groundnuts while food crops include maize, yam, cassava, guinea corn, millet and rice.
