Overview of Abia state

The state’s name ‘Abia’ is an acronym formed from the initial letters of first four local government areas in the state: Aba, Bende, lsuikwuato and Afikpo. These constituted the major groups in the state at its creation.

Abia state came into existence from 27th November, 1991, when the Federal Military Government under General lbrahim Babangida carved out the State from Imo State.

Location

Abia state is located in the southeastern region of Nigeria. The state shares land boundaries to the north with Ebonyi State; to the west is Imo State, and to the northwest is Anambra State; to the south and southwest with Rivers State; and to the east and southeast with Cross River and Akwa lbom States respectively. The state is also among the Niger Delta states in Nigeria.

With respect to landmass, Abia State covers an area of about 5,243.7 sq. km which is approximately 5.8 per cent of the total land area of the country. The state lies within approximately latitudes 4? 40′ and 6? 14′ north, and longitudes 7? 10′ and 8? east.

With its capital at Umuahia, it has seventeen local government areas which includes: Aba North, Aba South, Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, Ukwa West, Ukwa East, Obingwa, lkwuano, Bende, Arochukwu, Ohafia, lsuikwuato, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Ugwunagbo, Osisioma and Nnochi.

People & Culture

Abia state just like any other south eastern state in Nigeria, they are of the Igbo ethnic group who predominates this region of the country. Their traditional language is Igbo and it variants, with English widely spoken and serves as the lingua Franca which is the official language in communication, governance and business. Abia state are pre-dominantly Christians with the  few rest being traditional worshippers. There are also a scare number of Muslims in the state.

Abia state is also known for their rich culture and traditions which incorporate masquerade displays, dance and the popular yam festival.
