Current Cost of Borehole Drilling in Nigeria (November, 2024)

Water is a free gift of nature and its use in everyday life can’t be overemphasized. We all need water to drink, bathe, clean and do all sorts of things, hence the reason why people store up water in tanks, gallons, etc as the case maybe. In Nigeria, if you don’t have a constant source of water supply, you would be at a disadvantage. No wonder people either try drilling a borehole or digging up a well.

While we aren’t against digging a well, the disadvantage of it weighs more than when you drill a borehole. First, its more expensive and secondly, it is old fashioned. We shouldn’t forget that most death cases of small children falling into a well has seen this method of water storage go extinct these days.

Current-Cost-of-Borehole-Drilling-in-Nigeria

Depending on how far the water is at ground surface, water boreholes are drilled from a range of a hundred to two hundred feet. Due to the man power and equipment involved, the drilling process could be expensive as labour, electricity to power the drilling equipment are all added up when summing up the monetary costs.

The cost of drilling a borehole in Nigeria today varies from state to state. For instance, I can authoritatively tell you that it would cost you more in the south east than in the south west. In this write-up, we explore how much it would cost you to drill a borehole in Nigeria this 2024.

COST OF BOREHOLE DRILLING IN NIGERIA

Depending on the drilling process, location and man power involved, borehole drilling can cost between ₦120,000 to ₦500,000 on average especially if you live in states like Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ibadan, etc. For those who reside in the south east like Anambra, Imo and Enugu states, the price ranges from ₦500,000 and ₦3,000,000 to drill a borehole in Nigeria.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE COST OF BOREHOLE DRILLING PROCESS IN NIGERIA

There are some factors that would determine how much you would pay to drill a borehole in any area or state in Nigeria. The type of borehole drilling processes involved, location, how deep the water is and the feet to be drilled are just a few of these factors. We highlight some of these below.

1. THE TYPE OF DRILLING PROCESS

There are two types of borehole drilling process and they include – the manual drilling process which involves more than ten persons to drill the borehole and the heavy-duty borehole drilling process which requires the use of heavy-duty machine and less work force to achieve the desired objective.

While most people would go for the manual drilling method due to its cost effectiveness, it normally takes more time and is a slower method especially when compared to the heavy-duty method. This type would cost you about N120,000 to N300,000.

The heavy-duty drilling process, although expensive is faster and requires lesser manpower. It would cost you from N600, 000 to N3 million if you chooses this method especially for renting the heavy machine equipment for the drilling.

2. AREA OR LOCATION OF STATE

Location is a strong determinant to the prices of borehole drilling in Nigeria. Some areas in Lagos like Ikorodu would accept N120,000 for the process, while other expensive areas like Surulere would collect N500,000 for similar purpose. This also goes for state to state.

How much you pay for drilling a borehole in Lagos will be entirely different for that in Abuja and every parts of the country.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE ON BOREHOLE DRILLING

While the advantage of having a borehole in a house sounds cool, there are environmental hazards attached to the process. Research has shown that too many boreholes in a geographical area puts such areas at a risk of earthquake, a natural disaster. This is as result of disturbing the earth when drilling, i.e the making of a narrow, deep hole in the ground.

There are some areas that have access to public water that isn’t clean for cooking or drinking. Residents of such areas might want to dig a well or drill a water borehole so as to curb the effect of issues in accessing clean water. There are geological companies involved in borehole drilling you can contact for advice when it comes to location where the borehole will be situated.

Aside aiding in the borehole drilling process, these companies carry out underground geological check to understand the topography of the environment and where to drill underground for water.
