All Unity schools in Nigeria are also known as Federal Government Colleges (FGC), and admission into these Federal Government Colleges is based on a quota system; in this quota system, 30% of prospective students are admitted based on merit irrespective of their state of origin; another 30% are admitted from other states; of the Federation, another 30% from the host state; and then, the final 10% are admitted based on exigency.

Before the Federal Government built these existing Federal Government Colleges, there existed King’s College and Queen’s College which were both established in the colonial era. Both schools are the first unity schools in Nigeria and they’re both located in Lagos State.

After Nigeria gained independence from Great Britain, there were three unity schools built by the Federal Government in Warri, Enugu and Sokoto. After these, the Federal Government in 1973 commenced building other unity schools in all the states across the country.

Scattered across the 36 states of Nigeria are over 104 federal government colleges.  These colleges, otherwise known as unity schools can be classed amongst the best secondary schools in Nigeria.

In each of the 36 states, there is usually at least one or two schools. There are vast benefits for establishing these schools. They include promoting national unity and strong bonding with pupils from different parts of the country. Another purpose for founding these schools is to create an avenue for the intermingling of various cultures.
