Overview of Anambra State

Anambra is situated in southeastern region of Nigeria. The state got it name from Anambra river (Omambala), a major river in the state which flows through the area and is a tributary of the River Niger. Anambra state has a capital and seat of government in the developed city of Awka. Anambra state has boundaries with Delta State to the west, Imo State and Rivers State to the south, Enugu State to the east, and Kogi State to the north.

It is also interesting to note that the state has a historic port city, Onitsha. The city existed from the pre-colonial times, and is at present the largest urban area in the state.

Igbos are the predominant ethnic group in Anambra state as they make up 98% of the state’s population. There is also a small population (about 2%) of Igala in the state, who are found in the north- western part of the state.

Anambra state is rich in natural gas, crude oil, bauxite, and ceramic. Anambra state has many other resources such as fisheries and farming, as well as land cultivated for pasturing and animal husbandry, in terms of agro-based activities. The state has a high a good per capital income and is rated as the lowest with respect to poverty rate in Nigeria.

Aguata Local Government Area

Aguata LGA is a local government area in Anambra state. The local government has it headquarter in the town of Aguata, which the LG got it name.

Other towns in Aguata LGA are: Achina, Akpo, Amesi, Ekwuluobia, Ezinifite, igbo-Ukwu, Isuofia, Uga, Umuchu, Nkpologwu, Oraeri, isuanaoma, Umuona, and Ikenga.

Awka South LGA is the centralised local government in Anambra state and counts as one of the LGAs of the state. The local government is headquatered at Awka Town, the state’s capital.

Towns in Awka South LGA include: Amawbia, Ifite-Akwa, Ezinato, Ishiagu, Mbaukwu, Nibo, Nise, Okpuno, and Umuawulu.

Ayamelum LGA is a local government in Anambra state. The local government is one of the coming local government in Anambra and it is headquatered in the town of Anaku.

Idemili South Local Government Area

Idemili South LGA is a prominent local government in Anambra state. It has an headquarter in the town of Ojoto.

Ihiala Local Government Area

Ihiala LGA is headquartered in the town of Ihiala, a renowned town in the state. The following towns also make up Ihiala LGA: Azia, Okija, Mbosi, Amorka, Isseke, Orsumoghu, Ubuluisiuzor, Uli and Lilu.

Njikoka Local Government Area

Towns in Njikoka LGA includes: Abagana, Enugwu-Ukwu, Nimo, Enugwu-Agidi, Nawfia and Abba.

Nnewi North Local Government Area

Nnewi North LGA is one of the renowned local government area in the state. The local government is headquartered in the town of Nnewi.

Nnewi South Local Government Area

Nnewi South LGA is a local government area in Anambra. It has an administrative headquarter in Ukpor Town. The towns that make up the LGA are: Ukpor, Ekwulumili, Amichi, Azigbo, Unubi, Osumenyi, Ogbodi, Ebenator, Utuh, Ezinifite and Akwaihedi.

Ogbaru LGA has an headquarter in the town of Atani, which all the administration is done. Onitsha South Local Government Area

Onitsha South LGA is an industrialised local government in the state. It has an administrative headquarter in Fegge Town of Onitsha.

Other towns in Onitsha South LGA include: Iweka, Odoakpu, Woliwo, Awada, and Ochanja.

Orumba North Local Government Area

Orumba North LGA is another local government in Anambra state. The LGA has a capital in the town of Ajalli. Aside, other prominent towns in Orumba North LGA include: Akpu, Ajalli, Amaokpalla, Amaetiti, Awa, Nanka, Ndikelionwu, Ndiokolo, Ndiokpola, Ndiowu, Ndiukwue, Okpoeze, Omogho and Ufuma.

Orumba South LGA is a local government in Anambra, and it has an administrative headquarter in Umunze Town.

Other towns in Orumba South LGA are; Agbudu, Ezira, Eziagu, Enugwu-Umuonyia ihite, Isulo, Ndiokpoleze, Nkerehi, Ogboji, Ogbunka, Onneh, Owerre- Ezukala, Umunzem and Umuomoku.

Oyi Local Government Area

Oyi LGA is headquartered in the town of Nteje. There are other towns in the state, and they include: Ogbunnike, Awkuzu, Nkwelle-Ezunaka, Nteje, Umunebe and Umunya.
