NIGERIA NAVY RANKS AND SALARY STRUCTURE (2024)

The Chief of Naval Staff currently holds the highest rank in the navy. The chief of naval staff is in charge of the Navy’s affairs and activities. In addition, the chief of staff reports to and is accountable to the Commander-in-Chief. Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas is the current chief of staff.

The Nigerian Navy also has a distinct salary structure for Naval Officers serving in the force. This is similar to the Nigerian Police Force’s Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS) and the Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONTISS) for university lecturers.

Salary and rank in the Nigerian navy are proportional, as they are in other professions. This means that the salary of a Nigerian navy officer rises as the officer’s rank rises. When officers are promoted while serving in the Navy, they are usually promoted in a sequential order (from a particular rank to the next). It can also be exponential at times (skipping one or more ranks to promote an officer to a higher rank).

Furthermore, the Nigerian navy’s ranks and pay structure are divided into two categories. The force’s naval officers can be either commissioned or non-commissioned.

COMMISSIONED OFFICERS RANKS AND SALARY

Some of the Nigerian Navy’s commissioned officers are graduates of the Nigeria Defense Academy in Kaduna. While some are university graduates, others have been selected through the Direct Short Service Commission.

The commissioned cadre is divided into twelve ranks. Starting at the bottom, with the Midshipman, and working your way up to the top, with the Admiral of the fleet. Midshipmen are new graduates from the Nigeria Defense Academy and other intakes. They continue to climb the ladder until they reach the highest level, Admiral of the Fleet.
